Journey from Kathmandu to Chitwan is your gateway to jungle adventure. Smooth roads, scenic drives, and easy bus or flight options await.

A journey from the bustling streets of Kathmandu to the serene wilderness of Chitwan marks the beginning of an unforgettable safari experience. The transition from city chaos to jungle calm is remarkably smooth, thanks to well-maintained roads and reliable transport links that make this leg of your Nepal trip both comfortable and scenic. Whether you are a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler returning to the Terai plains, getting to Chitwan National Park is an adventure in itself, offering glimpses of rural life, river valleys, and terraced hills along the way.

The most popular and cost-effective option is the tourist bus, which departs daily from Kathmandu’s tourist hub and arrives in Sauraha or Bharatpur in approximately five to six hours. These buses are modern, air-conditioned, and designed for comfort, with stops for refreshments and restrooms. The drive follows the Prithvi Highway through the scenic Trishuli River valley, then turns south toward the flatlands, where the landscape transforms into lush farmland and dense forest. For those who prefer a more private experience, hiring a car or jeep offers flexibility to stop for photos or break the journey at your own pace.

For travelers short on time, a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Bharatpur is a swift alternative, taking just twenty-five minutes. Upon landing, a short drive of about twenty minutes brings you to the heart of Chitwan’s jungle lodges. While flights offer speed and aerial views of the Himalayas and the Terai, we recommend the overland route for first-time visitors—it provides a richer sense of Nepal’s geography and culture. Regardless of your choice, both options are well-organized and available year-round, with peak season offering more frequent departures.
Once you arrive, the real magic begins. The moment you step off the bus or plane, the air changes—thicker, warmer, and filled with the sounds of birds and distant wildlife. From here, your lodge will typically arrange a short transfer to your accommodation, and you can immediately feel the pulse of the jungle. We suggest planning your departure from Kathmandu early in the morning to maximize your first afternoon in Chitwan, perhaps with a village walk or a sunset canoe ride along the Rapti River. The journey itself is part of the story, and we are here to help you write it well.
