Kailash Door Darshan Yatra – 7 Days

Your pilgrimage begins the moment you start your yatra from Kathmandu. Depending on your preference and arrival time, you will either take a short domestic flight to Nepalgunj or, if you are arriving overland from India, our team can coordinate your entry at the border town of Nepalgunj itself.

Nepalgunj is a lively city on the edge of the Terai plains, where the flat farmlands meet the distant Himalayan horizon. This is your first evening of the yatra, a chance to settle into your hotel, enjoy a warm meal, and meet your guide. The air here carries a different energy, one that signals the beginning of your sacred journey toward the holy sites that await in the far west. After a brief orientation, you will rest early, as tomorrow’s flight into the high mountains will take you to Simikot, the gateway to Humla.

Your day begins with an early morning flight from Nepalgunj, soaring over the dramatic Himalayan foothills and the deeply carved Karnali River valley. As the aircraft descends into the remote airstrip at Simikot, the district headquarters of Humla, you will feel the air grow thinner and the landscape more rugged. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your teahouse for check-in and a brief rest.

The afternoon is intentionally kept light for acclimatization. You will take a gentle walk through the charming village of Simikot, where stone houses and narrow lanes offer a glimpse into daily life in this isolated region. A visit to a local Gompa, one of the oldest Himalayan Buddhist monasteries in Nepal, allows you to absorb the spiritual atmosphere and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.

This is also a wonderful opportunity to interact with the friendly Humli people, known for their warm hospitality and unique culture. The easy pace of the day helps your body adjust to the altitude while immersing you in the serene environment that will define your pilgrimage. Overnight in Simikot.

Day 3 of your yatra begins with a scenic drive from Simikot, heading towards the high-altitude settlement of Dipling at 4,150 meters. The journey takes you over the challenging Nelu Pass, which reaches 5,000 meters, offering dramatic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and the rugged terrain of Humla. This drive is a highlight of the pilgrimage, providing a gradual ascent that prepares you for the spiritual rewards ahead.

Upon reaching Dipling, you will settle into your teahouse or tented camp accommodation. The afternoon is free for acclimatization and personal reflection, with the crisp mountain air and remote setting deepening your sense of pilgrimage. From Dipling, you are well-positioned for the following day’s trek to the Kailash Door Darshan Viewpoint, where the sacred darshan of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar awaits.

This leg of the journey showcases the raw beauty of far-western Nepal, with the Nelu Pass offering panoramic vistas that are both humbling and inspiring. The drive itself is a meditative experience, as the landscape shifts from pine and juniper forests to stark, high-altitude plateaus, reinforcing the sacred nature of your quest.

Drive from Dipling to the Kailash Door Darshan Viewpoint, a journey of approximately 2 to 3 hours over rugged mountain roads. At an altitude of 5,100 meters, the viewpoint offers an unobstructed and profound panorama of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, a sight that has drawn pilgrims for centuries. The morning light casts long shadows across the Tibetan plateau, and the stillness of the high desert amplifies the spiritual weight of the moment. Your guide will explain the monastery’s significance and its role in the spiritual life of the Limi Valley. Return to Dipling for the night, where your teahouse accommodation offers simple comfort and warm hospitality. The evening is free for reflection, journaling, or sharing stories with fellow pilgrims under the vast Himalayan sky. This day combines the exhilaration of reaching the highest point of the yatra with the grounding experience of visiting a living monastery, balancing awe and reverence in equal measure.

Drive from Dipling to Simikot via the scenic Nelu Pass, a five-to-six-hour high-altitude crossing offering panoramic Himalayan views and a sense of remoteness. Descend through barren highlands to sheltered valleys, where small settlements and prayer flags mark your approach to spiritual stops.

First, visit Tashigang Gompa, a 13th-century monastery perched on a rocky outcrop, known for its serene atmosphere and well-preserved Buddha murals. Continue to Halji village and the 11th-century Rinchenling Monastery, founded by Rinchen Zangpo, with intricate frescoes and statues that reveal the region’s deep spiritual heritage.

The drive ends in Simikot, Humla’s bustling district headquarters. Relax and reflect on the day, with the evening free to explore the town’s streets or enjoy valley views. This route deepens your connection to the enduring Buddhist traditions and the holy sights ahead.

On this day, you will fly from Simikot back to Nepalgunj, enjoying a final panoramic view of the remote Himalayan landscapes you have traversed. The short flight offers a spectacular perspective of the Karnali River valley and the rugged terrain of far-western Nepal, a fitting aerial farewell to the region. For those looking to make the trip more economical, an optional overland drive from Simikot to Nepalgunj is also available, though this takes considerably longer and passes through rural roads and small settlements.

Upon arrival in Nepalgunj, you will have time to rest and freshen up at your hotel. Nepalgunj, a bustling city on the border with India, offers a contrast to the high-altitude serenity of Humla. You may choose to explore the local bazaars or simply relax and reflect on the spiritual experiences of the past days. This evening marks the conclusion of the pilgrimage portion of your yatra, and you can enjoy a final group dinner before your departure the next day.
