Explore the wild beauty of Nar Phu Valley on an 8-day trek through remote Himalayan villages, ancient monasteries, and dramatic landscapes. Perfect for adventurers seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience in Nepal.
Tucked away in the far northern reaches of the Annapurna region, the Nar Phu Valley offers one of Nepal’s most authentic and untamed trekking experiences. This 8-day journey leads you through a landscape that feels suspended in time, where windswept canyons and terraced fields give way to stone-built villages and centuries-old Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. It is a route for those who seek solitude, raw natural beauty, and a deep connection to a culture that has remained largely unchanged by the outside world. Unlike the bustling trails of the Annapurna Circuit, this restricted valley requires a special permit, ensuring that only a handful of trekkers each season experience its pristine environment and the warm hospitality of the Narpa people.
As you traverse the valley, you will encounter a land of striking contrasts—barren, high-altitude deserts carved by glacial rivers, dotted with hardy juniper and pine. The trail weaves through remote settlements like Meta and Nar, where the warmth of local hospitality is as constant as the prayer flags fluttering in the wind. Above it all, the snow-capped peaks of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges stand as silent sentinels, offering moments of profound stillness and awe. The highlight of the trek is the dramatic crossing of Kang La Pass at 5,320 meters, where the effort of the ascent is rewarded with panoramic views that stretch across the entire Himalayan arc.
This is not a crowded trek. Instead, it is an invitation to step off the well-trodden path and into a world where each step feels earned and every vista feels like a secret. For the adventurous traveler, the Nar Phu Valley promises a rare glimpse into a Himalayan way of life that has thrived in isolation for centuries—a journey that rewards not just with scenery, but with a sense of discovery that lingers long after the trail ends. With a seasoned local guide by your side, you will navigate rugged terrain, explore ancient monasteries like Tashi Lhakhang, and uncover hidden ice caves near Phu village, all while enjoying the comfort of authentic homestays and teahouses that anchor you in the rhythm of the valley.
For those looking to extend their adventure, nearby highlights include the classic Annapurna Circuit, which connects to the Nar Phu Valley at Koto and offers a longer loop through Thorong La Pass. The serene lakeside town of Pokhara, just a few hours’ drive away, provides a perfect place to rest after the trek, with paragliding, boating, and views of the Annapurna range. Alternatively, the Manaslu Circuit to the east presents another remote, permit-restricted journey through diverse landscapes and Tibetan-influenced villages, ideal for trekkers seeking further solitude and cultural immersion.
Drive from Kathmandu to Koto
Your trek begins with an early drive from Kathmandu, winding through terraced farmlands and forested foothills along the Trishuli River. After seven to eight hours, you arrive in Koto at 2,600 meters, the gateway where the road ends and your adventure starts.
Settle into a simple teahouse, stretch your legs with a short walk to explore the village or a nearby monastery, and enjoy a warm dinner. Your guide briefs you on the trail ahead before you rest for the night.
Trek from Koto to Meta
Your journey begins at the trailhead in Koto, following the Marsyangdi River through a deep gorge before branching north into a narrower canyon. The path climbs steadily through sparse pine forests and scattered fields, with the river as your constant companion and glimpses of snow-capped peaks growing more frequent as the landscape turns increasingly arid.
After six to seven hours of walking, you arrive at the stone-built settlement of Meta at 3,560 meters. Prayer flags flutter above traditional houses against a stark, high-altitude desert. A wood-burning stove and sweet spiced tea reward the day's effort, and as dusk settles, the stars emerge in an untouched sky—a perfect prelude to the adventures ahead.
Trek from Meta to Phu Gaon
From the stone settlement of Meta, the trail climbs steadily along the Phu Khola river through a deepening gorge with towering cliffs. Passing herders’ huts and prayer-flag-festooned chortens, the path opens onto a high, arid plateau. The walking is moderate to challenging, taking about five to six hours to reach Phu Gaon.
Phu Gaon is a hidden gem of flat-roofed stone houses at 4,080 meters, with Annapurna II dominating the horizon. You are welcomed into a homestay with warm butter tea. The afternoon is free to explore the ancient Tashi Lhakhang monastery, with its whitewashed walls and golden prayer wheels, or walk to nearby ice caves and frozen waterfalls shimmering in the late afternoon light.
Acclimatization & Exploration Day in Phu Gaon
Today is a rest day at Phu Ghau, giving you time to soak in the valley’s quiet beauty. We take a rewarding excursion to Himlung Base Camp, where stark alpine scenery and glimpses of local life create a memorable morning.
In the afternoon, we visit the ancient Tashi Lhakhang monastery, one of the world’s 108 oldest gompas. After exploring, we return to the lodge for a peaceful evening, enjoying the warmth of Phu Ghau hospitality.
Trek from Phu Gaon to Nar Village (via Nar Phedi)
Your trek continues from Phu Gaon, descending through the rugged canyon to the Nar Phedi junction, then climbing eastward through alpine meadows toward Nar Village. The six-to-seven-hour walk softens from stark rock to juniper and scrub, with gentle switchbacks leading to a ridge where Nar Village emerges beneath Annapurna II.
Arriving in Nar Village feels like stepping into a living museum. You are welcomed into a local homestay, where the evening is spent warming by the fire, sharing stories, and savoring a simple meal. As dusk settles, the peaks glow with alpenglow—a fitting reward for a day of transition between two of Nepal’s most remote settlements.
Trek from Nar to Ngawal via the Kang La Pass
Day 8 is the trek’s most challenging and rewarding day. You rise early in Nar village at over 4,100 meters and begin the steady 4- to 5-hour climb to Kang La Pass. The trail winds through alpine meadows past prayer-flag-draped cairns, with views of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges expanding with every step. Reaching the 5,320-meter summit offers a breathtaking 360-degree panorama and a moment of pure Himalayan stillness.
From the pass, you descend 3 to 4 hours into the Marsyangdi River valley, dropping sharply through rocky terrain toward Ngawal. This ridge-top settlement of traditional stone houses welcomes you with warm hospitality at a local teahouse, where a hearty meal and comfortable bed await. The contrast between the high, barren pass and the cozy village makes for a perfect end to an unforgettable day.
Trek from Ngawal to Chame Village
Today you leave Ngawal and descend toward Chame Village, the administrative center of Manang district. The trail winds through pine and juniper forests, crossing suspension bridges over the Marsyangdi River. As you lose altitude, the air grows warmer, and the landscape shifts from high-altitude desert to lush valleys dotted with apple orchards and terraced fields.
The walk takes about five to six hours, descending 400 meters. You pass through Koto, where the Nar Phu trail rejoins the Annapurna Circuit. In Chame, soak your tired muscles in natural hot springs—a perfect reward after days in the wild, remote valleys above.
Chame Village to Besisahar to Kathmandu via scenic drive
Your final day begins with a hearty breakfast in Chame before boarding a local jeep for the scenic drive to Besisahar. The road winds through lush forests, terraced fields, and traditional Gurung and Magar villages, offering a vivid contrast to the high-altitude desert you’ve left behind.
In Besisahar, you transfer to a private vehicle or tourist bus for the six-to-seven-hour drive to Kathmandu along the Prithvi Highway. Arriving by early evening, you’ll have time to reflect on the quiet stone villages, soaring peaks, and warm smiles of the Narpa people. A hot shower and comfortable bed await, marking the end of your journey into one of Nepal’s last true wildernesses.

“"Highly recommend this company.! We booked our Manaslu Circuit hike in the main office in Kathmandu, after going round a few different companies we settled for Manaslu Guides because this one just felt right. Having spoke with the owner in the office he tailor-made a trek for our needs. Madan, the owner is really helpful and honest and a pleasure to meet. We completed the Manaslu Circuit yesterday with our guide Bikram who was amazing! Such a lovely guy really and a great guide. We really felt comfortable with him and we learnt alot from him, and even gained a friend. We couldn't have asked for a guide more suited to us. Bikram is a humble guy and made us smile every day, and he even played the wooden flute at different times on the hike, sometimes in the morning and when we reached beautiful spots on the hike which really elevated our experience in such dramatic landscapes. We cannot praise him enough. We loved the trek and with Bikram, it made it even more special. Thanks again!" Date of experience: March 2026”
