Nepal is the best destination in the world for trekking and a pioneer in commercial trekking. The country has numerous famous trekking regions such as Everest and Annapurna. This mountainous country has many trekking trails filled with their own unique experiences to offer. One such trail is the Tsum Valley Manaslu Trek. Tsum Valley is located in the Gorkha district inside the jurisdiction of the Manaslu Conservation Area. The valley consists of 33 villages with a population of a little over 1800. The Tsum Valley Manaslu Trek takes you through this valley and around the Manaslu circuit.

The Tsum Valley Manaslu Trek offers a wonderful adventure through the remarkable beauty of the Manaslu region, the Tsum Valley’s charm complements that. Known for its rich Buddhist traditions and culture, Tsum Valley Manaslu Trek features many monasteries, mani walls with holy writings, and Chortens.

The trekking experience in Nepal has evolved over the years since the 1960s. In all the famous trekking areas guesthouses and teahouses have been established for accommodation, food, and a chance to meet other travellers.

In addition to the usual trekking permit for the Manaslu Conservation Area, a special permit is needed to visit the Tsum Valley area. The Nepal Tourism Authority and accredited trekking companies are the sources of these licenses. However, the companies only provide permits if the travelers are taking the trekking package with them as the agency will be held liable if the permit is provided and there is an incident.

Accommodations and Food during the Tsum Valley Manaslu Trek

Guesthouses: The large communities of the Manaslu Region have established guesthouses and restaurants. These establishments have all the essential amenities such as simple meals, hot showers, and private rooms. The local communities have built these guesthouses to promote tourism around these parts.

Homestays: Homestay is a popular option around these parts. Travelers’ need to learn and immerse in local culture is facilitated by this option of accommodation where they stay in the houses of the locals. The Homestays are made simple and yet cozy. It is equipped with clean beds, basic bathroom facilities, and authentic Nepali food.

Camping: For people who want an adventurous and outdoor experience camping is also an option for accommodation. There are designated camping areas along the trekking trail with running water and toilets. The camping equipment is to be brought by the travelers themselves. Energy snacks along with food that can be cooked during the trip should be carried.

However, it’s advised to carry water filters or water purification tablets for your safety.

Transportation during the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek

Previously, Tsum Valley And Manaslu Trek began in Arughat, which could be reached from Kathmandu by bus or jeep. Given the difficult and bumpy road conditions to Arughat, renting a private jeep was recommended for a more pleasant ride. Following infrastructure improvements, busses now reach Machhikhola, where the trip begins. This saves a few days to complete the trek. However, interested travelers can start the trek from Arughat.

Insurance Required for the Trek

Insurance is extremely important when attempting high-altitude trekking. It is highly recommended to purchase travel insurance that covers emergency evacuation, cancellation, and personal liability coverage. Travel agencies can help travelers select specific insurance that they will require to do the Tsum Valley Trek. The travelers can take insurance from their own country however the specifications are to be met. Always remember that safety should be the top priority.

Flora and Fauna in Manaslu Region

This trek takes people through diverse ecological regions that inhabit a variety of plants and animals. The upper part of the Manaslu region is heavily populated with Rhododendrons, Pine, and Oak trees giving home to a diverse species of birds. The region also harbors endangered animals such as snow leopards, Himalayan Tahr, musk deer, and red panda. Thus, the Manaslu Region is also a must-go for wildlife enthusiasts.

The climate in Tsum Valley and Manaslu Trek

Due to the altitude difference, the climate also covers a broader spectrum from 10 to 15 degrees Celcius (50 to 64 degrees Fahrenheit) to below-freezing point as the travelers ascend in altitude. The optimal season to attempt this trek is during Spring ( March to May) and Fall (September to November). During the off seasons rain, snow, avalanches, and other factors make the climate extremely unfavorable for trekking.

Level of Fitness for the Trek

Tsum Valley Manaslu Trek is a strenuous trek and requires a high level of fitness to complete the trek. Travelers are requested to maintain top fitness and make sure they are physically capable of doing the trek. Also, doing a few treks over 4000m is highly recommended before attempting this difficult trek. Keeping safety as the top priority, being prepared is a must before attempting this trek.

Equipment Required during the Trek

The perfect gear is a must for taking on the Tsum Valley Manaslu Trek. Necessary equipment includes durable trekking boots, moisture-wicking and fast-drying clothing layers, insulated, waterproof, and windproof shell jackets, pants, headgear, and gloves. Also, the traveler must carry sunglasses, a water bottle or hydration pouch, trekking poles, a sleeping bag (suitable for low temperatures), a first aid kit, energy snacks, and water purification tablets in a backpack with rain cover. A camera is recommended to capture and immortalize your experience.

Guides and Porters

The Manaslu trail requires the trekker to take a guide and/or porter. It’s not just for convenience but since it’s a restricted area it is mandatory to get a local guide. Additionally, a licensed guide can significantly improve a traveler’s experience as they are used to the trail and are given proper training to carry out the trekking safely. They are also provided with enough medical training to make sure the traveler returns safely. A local guide can also provide you with insights about the local culture and tradition enriching the traveler’s adventure. Usually, the locals provide a guide and porter service so hiring a porter contributes to the locals.
