Traverse the serene Gokyo Lakes, cross the Cho La Pass, and witness Everest from Gokyo Ri. This 11-day trek blends turquoise alpine waters with panoramic Himalayan vistas and unique Sherpa culture.
The Gokyo Lakes Trek invites you into a world where turquoise alpine waters mirror the towering peaks of the Everest region, creating a landscape that feels both serene and monumental. This 11-day journey is thoughtfully crafted for those who seek a quieter, more intimate encounter with the Himalayas, steering clear of the crowded main Everest base camp trail. Instead of following the throngs, you wind through traditional Sherpa villages, cross the dramatic Cho La Pass, and stand atop Gokyo Ri for a sunrise that unveils Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu in a single sweeping panorama. It is a route that rewards patience with perspective, offering a unique vantage point over the Khumbu Glacier and its ancient, shifting ice formations.
At the heart of this trek lies a chain of sacred, crystal-clear lakes, each one more striking than the last, framed by the immense Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest in the Himalayas. These waters are not just a visual highlight; they hold deep cultural significance for the local Sherpa people, who regard them as holy. As you walk, every step blends natural wonder with cultural richness, where centuries-old monasteries and welcoming teahouses provide warmth, stories, and a genuine taste of mountain hospitality. This is not merely a physical challenge but an invitation to experience the raw, unspoiled beauty of Nepal’s high country with a profound sense of discovery and calm. Whether you are a seasoned trekker or a first-time visitor to the Everest region, the Gokyo Lakes Trek offers a rewarding balance of alpine grandeur and authentic connection, all within a manageable timeframe that leaves you with memories to last a lifetime.

Fly from Kathmandu or Ramechhap to Lukla, Trek to Phakding
A scenic morning flight takes you to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. From here, you begin your trek with a gentle descent to the Dudh Koshi River valley, arriving at the charming village of Phakding for your first night on the trail.
Trek from Phagding to Namche Bazaar
Today’s trail follows the Dudh Koshi River, crossing several suspension bridges before a steep ascent to Namche Bazaar, the bustling Sherpa capital. The morning begins with a gentle walk through pine and rhododendron forests, where the sound of the river accompanies you beneath the shade of tall trees. You’ll cross the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge, swaying high above the gorge, and feel the air grow thinner as you climb. Along the way, take moments to look back—the views of Thamserku and Kwangde peaks become increasingly dramatic, their jagged ridges cutting into the sky.
The final push to Namche is a steady uphill on a well-trodden path, but the reward is worth every step. As you crest the last rise, the sprawling horseshoe-shaped village of Namche Bazaar unfolds before you, nestled in a natural amphitheater of towering mountains. This lively Sherpa hub is a gateway to the high Himalayas, offering a chance to explore its colorful market, visit the local bakery for a slice of apple pie, or simply soak in the vibrant atmosphere. Your guide will ensure a smooth arrival, and you’ll have the afternoon to acclimatize and prepare for the days ahead.
Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar
This day is dedicated to acclimatization, a crucial step for your body to adjust to the thinning air at 3,440 meters. In the morning, you take a gentle hike to the Everest View Hotel, perched on a ridge above Namche Bazaar. From this vantage point, the world’s highest peaks unfold before you — Everest, Lhotse, and the iconic Ama Dablam — offering one of the most accessible panoramas in the Khumbu region. The walk itself is a rewarding warm-up, weaving through pine forests with glimpses of the Dudh Koshi River far below.
After the hike, the afternoon is yours to explore Namche Bazaar at your own pace. This bustling Sherpa town is a vibrant hub of trade and culture, with colorful markets selling everything from trekking gear to handmade crafts. Visit the Sherpa Museum to learn about the region’s mountaineering history and traditional way of life, or simply wander through the narrow streets, stopping at a cozy teahouse for a cup of butter tea. This restful day ensures you are well-prepared for the higher altitudes ahead, while immersing you in the warmth and spirit of Sherpa hospitality.
Trek Fro Namche Bazar To Dole
Leaving the main Everest trail behind, you head north into the quieter Gokyo Valley, where the atmosphere shifts from bustling trekker traffic to a more serene mountain rhythm. The path winds through dense rhododendron forests, their crimson blossoms brightening the hillsides in spring, and across open yak pastures dotted with grazing herds. The ascent is gradual, allowing you to adjust comfortably to the altitude while the landscape opens up with ever-expanding views. Ahead, the massive southwest face of Cho Oyu, the world’s sixth-highest peak, begins to dominate the horizon, a constant companion as you make your way to the small settlement of Dole.
Dole is a peaceful cluster of stone houses and teahouses perched at around 4,200 meters, offering a quiet stop to rest and acclimatize. The air here is crisp and thin, and the surrounding hillsides are carpeted with juniper and alpine shrubs. This is a day of gentle discovery, where the trail’s seclusion lets you absorb the subtle beauty of the high Himalayas without the crowds. As the afternoon light softens, the peaks take on a golden glow, and the only sounds are the wind and the distant tinkling of yak bells, reminding you that the heart of the Gokyo experience lies just ahead.
Trek From Dole to Machhermo
A shorter day allows for further acclimatization as you continue up the valley. The trail passes through alpine meadows and offers close-up views of Kangtega and Thamserku. Machhermo is a peaceful hamlet with a yak farm.
Trek from Machhermo to Gokyo Lakes
Today you reach the stunning Gokyo Lakes, a series of turquoise glacial lakes that are the heart of this trek. The trail ascends the terminal moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in the Himalayas, offering a dramatic landscape of ancient ice and rocky terrain. As you climb, the first lake, known as Longpongo, appears like a jewel set against the stark high-altitude surroundings, its vivid color a striking contrast to the grey moraine. The walk is relatively short but involves steady elevation gain, and the reward is the sight of the lakes growing closer with each step. The air grows thinner as you approach the lakeside village of Gokyo, situated at an altitude of around 4,970 meters, where the main cluster of tea houses offers a warm welcome.
Settling into Gokyo, you are surrounded by the serene beauty of the third and largest of the Gokyo Lakes, Dudh Pokhari. The afternoon is yours to explore the shoreline, where the still waters reflect the towering peaks of Cho Oyu and the surrounding snow-clad ridges. The atmosphere here is peaceful and unhurried, a perfect contrast to the more crowded trails of the region. You can visit a small monastery perched on a hill above the village, or simply sit by the lake, soaking in the profound stillness of this high Himalayan sanctuary. The evening brings a chance to share stories with fellow trekkers in the cozy dining room, as the sun sets and the peaks glow in alpenglow.
Acclimatization- Gokyo Ri Ascent and Exploration
An early morning climb to Gokyo Ri rewards you with one of the best panoramic views in the Himalayas, including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. The ascent takes about two to three hours from the village of Gokyo, and as you gain elevation, the first rays of sunlight paint the peaks in shades of gold and rose. At the summit, standing at 5,357 meters, you are surrounded by a 360-degree spectacle of jagged ridges and vast glaciers, with the turquoise Gokyo Lakes glittering far below. This is a moment of pure Himalayan magic, one that lingers long after you descend.
After taking in the sunrise from Gokyo Ri, you return to the village and have the rest of the day to explore further. You can venture to the fourth lake, known as Thonak Tsho, and the fifth lake, Ngozumpa Tsho, which are less visited and offer a deeper sense of solitude. Alternatively, you may choose to relax by the shores of the main Gokyo Lake, Dudh Pokhari, where the calm, reflective waters provide a perfect spot for quiet contemplation. The afternoon is yours to savor the serene alpine environment, perhaps with a warm cup of tea at a teahouse while watching the light shift across the surrounding peaks. This day balances effort and tranquility, allowing you to fully absorb the grandeur of the Gokyo region.
Trek Back to Dole via Machhermo
From Gokyo, you descend along the Ngozumpa Glacier with sweeping views back to the turquoise lakes and peaks of Cho Oyu. The landscape shifts from glacial moraine to alpine meadows dotted with juniper and rhododendron.
The six-to-seven-hour walk includes gentle downhill sections, passing the settlement of Phangka before reaching Dole at 4,200 meters, a quiet village surrounded by birch and pine forest. The thicker air offers a welcome recovery after the high-altitude days.
In Dole, relax with a warm drink as the last light catches Kangtega and Thamserku. This descent gives a fresh perspective on the Khumbu region, a rewarding conclusion to your journey from the high lakes and passes.
Trek from Dole to Monjo – Descend Through Pine Forests and Sherpa Villages
From Dole, you descend through pine and rhododendron forests into the Khumbu Valley, where the Dudh Koshi River grows louder with every step. The shift from thin, alpine air to warmer, oxygen-rich lower altitudes offers a restorative contrast, allowing you to soak in the lush greenery and vibrant slopes.
Pass through charming Sherpa villages like Machhermo and Phortse Tenga, with stone houses and prayer flags dotting the terraced hillsides. Glimpses of Cho Oyu and Thamserku accompany you as the trail narrows over suspension bridges. After five to six hours, you arrive at Monjo, a serene village at the entrance of Sagarmatha National Park, where pine-scented air and birdsong welcome you. Your cozy tea house by the river provides a peaceful evening to reflect on the trek ahead.
Trek from Monjo to Lukla via Phakding
From Monjo, you descend gently through the Dudh Koshi Valley to Phakding, passing prayer wheels and rhododendron-lined walls. The easy walking lets you reflect on the high mountain days while the river accompanies you.
A short climb brings you to Lukla in about four to five hours, with no major ascents. Celebrate your trek with a warm meal and last mountain views before your flight back to Kathmandu. Overnight in Lukla.
Fly Back to Kathmandu From Lukla
Your final day begins with a morning flight from Lukla to Kathmandu, a 30- to 40-minute journey offering sweeping views of the Himalayas, including Everest and Cho Oyu on clear days. Upon landing at the domestic terminal, our staff transfers you to your hotel.
The rest of the day is yours to rest, explore Thamel, or reflect on the turquoise Gokyo Lakes, the Cho La Pass crossing, and the sunrise from Gokyo Ri. Your guide ensures you are comfortably settled, marking the end of an unforgettable Himalayan journey.

“This is not my first choice of Touch the Himalayas. Having good experience of one-day trip around Kathmandu last year, and based on the experience of my friends, we chose this firm again for Everest BC and Gokyo lakes individual trek. I admire director of firm Madan and his ability to meet all client expectations. Madan helped us to prepare for the trip, resolved our queries and offered complements after trek (such as massage and farewell dinner). Despite of some unpleasant weather conditions, this was wonderful trek and wonderful experience with a lot of sweet memories I also appreciate the efforts of our dear guide and porter during the trek we were the best team ever I do reconnect Touch the Himalayas to organize your trek in Nepal or ever in neighboring countries.”
