Trek the Manaslu Circuit and Discover the Sacred Serang Gompa

The Manaslu Circuit Trek with Serang Gompa offers a unique way to explore the spectacular Manaslu region while experiencing its rich Buddhist culture and remote mountain communities. This carefully designed adventure combines the classic Manaslu Circuit with a visit to Serang Gompa, a peaceful Buddhist monastery located in the beautiful and secluded Serang Valley.

The journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu toward the lower Manaslu region before following the Budhi Gandaki Valley through traditional villages, lush forests, dramatic river gorges, waterfalls, and impressive Himalayan landscapes. As the trail climbs higher, the scenery gradually changes from subtropical countryside to alpine terrain, revealing magnificent views of Mt. Manaslu (8,163m) and surrounding peaks.

A major highlight of this itinerary is the visit to Serang Gompa, where trekkers can experience the peaceful atmosphere of a remote Himalayan monastery and gain a deeper appreciation of the region's Tibetan Buddhist traditions. The surrounding valley offers beautiful mountain scenery and a genuine opportunity to experience a less-visited part of the Manaslu region.

Continuing along the classic Manaslu Circuit, the trek passes through important villages including Namrung, Lho, Shyala, Samagaun, and Samdo before reaching Larkya Phedi. After proper acclimatization, you cross the challenging Larkya La Pass (5,106m), one of the highest and most spectacular points of the trek, before descending toward Bimthang and Dharapani.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek with Serang Gompa is ideal for travelers looking for a combination of high Himalayan scenery, Buddhist culture, remote villages, challenging mountain trails, and authentic local experiences. With experienced local guides and carefully planned acclimatization, Touch The Himalaya provides a safe and memorable journey through one of Nepal's most remarkable trekking regions.

Trek from Bihi Phedi to Serang Gumba: a short but steep climb through pine and rhododendron forest, gaining altitude to 3,200m.

Your trek from Bihi Phedi to Serang Gumba is a day of steady ascent through a landscape that grows increasingly wild and spiritual. You begin early, following a trail that climbs gently above the Budhi Gandaki River, passing through sparse forests of rhododendron and pine. As the morning light spills over the surrounding ridges, you catch your first distant views of the Manaslu massif, a reminder of the immense scale of this circuit. The path is quiet, with only the sound of your boots on the dirt and the occasional call of a Himalayan bird breaking the silence. After several hours of walking, the trail narrows and becomes steeper, winding through rocky terrain that demands careful footing. You gain altitude steadily, and the air begins to thin, but the effort is rewarded with panoramic vistas of snow-capped peaks and deep, forested valleys below.

The final approach to Serang Gumba is a gradual climb that brings you to a small plateau, where the monastery emerges like a hidden jewel against the mountainside. Serang Gumba is a serene Buddhist retreat, adorned with colorful prayer flags that flap in the wind, and its white-washed walls stand in stark contrast to the rugged surroundings. You spend the afternoon exploring the monastery grounds, listening to the murmur of chants from resident monks, and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. This is a place for reflection, far from the crowds of more popular treks, and it offers a genuine connection to the region’s spiritual heritage. Day 12Acclimatization

Acclimatize in Samagaun with an optional hike to Manaslu Base Camp or Birendra Lake

Hike from Samagaon to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800m) and return, then explore serene Birendra Lake. This acclimatization day offers close views of the south face and glacial terrain.

Today is an acclimatization day designed to heighten your body’s readiness for the high-altitude challenges ahead. From Samagaon, you will embark on a round-trip hike to Manaslu Base Camp, perched at 4,800 meters. The trail climbs steadily through rocky moraine and sparse alpine terrain, offering an intimate encounter with the colossal south face of Mount Manaslu. The glacier-carved landscape here feels raw and ancient, with crevasses and icefalls painting a dramatic picture of the mountain’s power. After reaching the base camp and absorbing the sheer scale of the peak, you will retrace your steps back to Samagaon, a journey that typically takes around 5 to 6 hours of walking.

In the afternoon, a gentle detour leads you to Birendra Lake, a serene turquoise body of water nestled among the hills. The lake is named after the late King Birendra and is a place of quiet reflection, with prayer flags fluttering along its shores. The calm waters mirror the surrounding peaks, creating a perfect contrast to the ruggedness of the base camp hike. This combination of a strenuous morning and a peaceful afternoon provides both physical conditioning and moments of spiritual calm, preparing you for the demanding days ahead, including the eventual crossing of Larkya La Pass.

Journey from Samagaun to Samdo: Ascending Toward the Larkya La Pass

Samagaun to Samdo a gradual ascent through alpine terrain, reaching 3,860m, preparing for the Larkya La Pass crossing.

Today’s walk from Samagaun to Samdo is a relatively short but important acclimatization day, covering about 4 to 5 hours of steady, gradual ascent. The trail leaves the stone houses and prayer wheels of Samagaun behind, following the Budhi Gandaki River as it narrows into a rocky gorge. You’ll cross a suspension bridge and climb gently through sparse juniper and alpine scrub, with the valley walls closing in around you. The landscape becomes more barren and exposed, a clear signal that you are moving into the high-altitude realm of the Larkya La. Along the way, keep an eye out for the crumbling ruins of old trading posts, remnants of the salt-and-wool caravans that once crossed this route into Tibet.

As you approach Samdo at 3,860 meters, the settlement appears as a cluster of simple stone lodges set against a dramatic backdrop of moraine and glacier-fed streams. This is the last permanent village before the pass, and its remote atmosphere is palpable. Samdo was traditionally a summer settlement for herders and traders, and you can still feel that frontier spirit in the air. The afternoon is free for a short acclimatization walk, perhaps up the side valley toward the Tibetan border or along the ridges above the village. Rest well tonight, hydrate thoroughly, and let your body adjust to the thinning air — tomorrow’s walk to the base of Larkya La will test your endurance.

Samdo to Dharamsala (Larkya High Camp): a short 3-4 hour acclimatization walk, ascending from 3,875m to 4,460m, preparing for the early morning Larkya La Pass crossing.

Today’s walk is short but purposeful. You leave Samdo and begin a gentle climb toward Dharamsala, also known as Larkya High Camp, at 4,460 meters. The trail takes you through arid, high-altitude terrain where the vegetation thins and the mountains close in around you. The 3 to 4 hour hike is designed for acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust to the thinning air before the big push. As you ascend, views of the surrounding peaks — including Manaslu itself — become more intimate, the silence broken only by the crunch of gravel underfoot and the wind sweeping across the valley.

Arriving at Dharamsala feels like stepping into a high-altitude sanctuary. The simple teahouses here offer a warm refuge against the cold, and the atmosphere is charged with quiet anticipation. You spend the afternoon resting, hydrating, and preparing for an early start the next morning. The Larkya La Pass looms above, and this evening, as the sun sets behind the ridges, you feel the raw, untamed spirit of the Himalayas more than ever. This is the calm before the defining moment of your journey.

The Toughest Day Dharmasala to Bhimtang via Larkya La Pass is the ultimate test of endurance and spirit on the Manaslu

The toughest day spans 7–9 hours from Dharmasala to Bhimtang, starting before dawn to cross the Larkya La at 5,106m, with a steep glacial climb and a dramatic, rocky descent into the valley.

Today is the pinnacle of your Manaslu Circuit. You will wake long before sunrise in the high-altitude outpost of Dharmasala, where the air is thin and biting. The trail immediately begins a steep, steady climb over glacial moraine and rock, leading you to the crest of the Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters. The effort is immense, but the reward is a 360-degree panorama of some of the most dramatic ice-clad peaks in the Himalaya, a view that feels earned in every sense.

The descent on the far side is equally demanding, a long, rocky drop into the lush valley of Bhimtang. The landscape transforms from stark white and grey to alpine meadows and pine forests as you lose altitude. After 7 to 9 hours of focused hiking, you arrive in Bhimtang, a settlement that feels like a haven after the high pass. The sense of accomplishment here is profound, marking the true climax of your journey around the eighth-highest mountain on Earth.

Bhimtang (3,590m) to Tilche (2,640m) — steep descent through rhododendron forests, rocky trails, waterfalls, and remote settlements, dropping nearly 1,000m in elevation.

Today’s descent from Bhimtang to Tilche is a dramatic plunge through the heart of the Manaslu region’s wild beauty. You drop nearly 1,000 meters in elevation, following a steep trail that winds through dense rhododendron forests, past cascading waterfalls, and along rocky paths carved by centuries of footfall. The air changes as you lose altitude, growing warmer and richer with the scent of pine and damp earth, while the distant roar of the Budhi Gandaki River grows louder with every switchback. This is a day of contrasts, where the high, stark landscapes of the pass give way to lush, vibrant valleys.

Along the way, you pass through remote settlements that feel suspended in time, their stone houses and terraced fields clinging to the hillsides. The trail offers glimpses of daily life far from the modern world, with locals tending to livestock and prayer flags fluttering in the breeze. The descent is relentless but rewarding, each step bringing you closer to the roar of the river and the forest’s cool embrace. By the time you reach Tilche, the sense of accomplishment is matched only by the peaceful exhaustion of a day spent moving through one of Nepal’s most pristine landscapes.

Serious agency, perfect for Manaslu region

“I totally advise this agency for organising treks in the Manaslu region. They perfectly know this area and it helps a lot to adjust schedule regarding highlights to see, weather forecast and speedness that is the best for us. Also, one of their strongness is to perfectly follow the rules of high altitudes, to arrange nice acclimatization and be able to go over that high altitude pass. Particular thank you to our 2 guides Kedar and Tenzing for their kindness and professionnalism. And Madan for the organisation and his welcoming! ”

“May 2026 • Friends Madan in the office made it very easy to manage the administrative side of travelling to Nepal to complete the Manaslu circuit. From visas, to trekking permits to accommodation on arrival, it all went without a hitch. It was no problem for Madan to alter our itinerary to add in two extra days for side walks and when one of our group had to pull out at the last minute, that too was handled with equanimity with Madan offering to hold the deposit for a future trip. He was very responsive with communication via WhatsApp and email and answered any query about gear, hygiene etc within 24 hrs. Our superlative guide was Roshan, a young Nepali so full of energy, humour and enthusiasm. He constantly worked to ensure our experience was perfect. Regularly informing us about what was happening next, seeking consensus on the next day’s plan and constantly checking in on how we were going were second nature to him. When one of the hotels had an issue with water in the bathroom he didn’t hesitate to move us to a better hotel across the road. Our two porters, Bir and Shuper were equally awesome, always attentive to our needs and going above and beyond to ensure our comfort. Travelling from Australia with it’s highest point only 2500m our small group of three had prepared for the physical challenge of the Manaslu circuit but apprehension remained regarding how we would handle the altitude. However, Roshan was always there, encouraging us to climb higher to ever more beautiful vantage points in the afternoons, when we could have been tempted to rest after completing the morning trek to our next, increasingly awesome destination. Sleeping each night at a lower altitude accelerated our acclimatisation giving us confidence for the final assault over the pass. I can’t say it was easy but resting at 5160m looking at the stunning Himalayan peaks, we felt on top of the world, both physically and mentally, and proud of our achievement. It was obvious too that Roshan, Shuper and Bir genuinely shared that pride and joy in getting us over the pass. From airport pickup to drop off, the whole experience was seamless. By the end, our group was tight-knit and firm friends. There had never been a hint of conflict and although sad to leave each other behind we were buoyed by our shared experience and memories. The Nepali people are wonderful and the profound beauty of the walk, both natural and cultural, is overwhelming - a peak life experience. I couldn’t recommend doing the Manaslu circuit more highly and I would certainly recommend trusting your experience to Madan and his team at Manaslu Guides/ Touching the Himalayas. When I get home I am telling my sons and their friends that they just have to do it!”

Genuine, human, physical challenge

“Thank you very much to Madan, and to Kedar for their kindness and professionalisms! we left for the trek of Manaslu but ill health forced me to be repatriated by helicopter to the hospital of Kathmandu. They accompanied me from the beginning to the end. I even had the chance to do a scooter trek to Kathmandu with Kedar and visit a part of the city when the form was there. I can only recommend this serious agency with a really attentive guide!!!it always feels good when you are away from yours to have someone who reassures you and who is always positive! Fun but very serious I highly recommend...you can go with your eyes closed Vincent”

Go with your eyes closed

“We did the Manaslu circuit for two weeks. Everything went very well, the scenery was beautiful. Everything was very well organized, Madan was always available and even helped us after the trek. Our guide Roshan was flexible according to our desires and managed to make us comfortable despite random weather. Kind and funny, thanks to him we were always the first served at the table in the hotels 😂 Thank you again for this beautiful memories and superb experience. We recommend with your eyes closed.”

The whole experience was amazing!

“The whole experience was amazing! We were happy to have our guide with us, he was full of knowledge and we felt safe with him. He was almost like part of our family, we could talk honestly and have fun together. The whole trek was well planned and they happily agreed to change things if needed. I would advise Touch The Himalaya to anyone who wants to go trekking as it satisfied all of our expectations.”

Nepal Trek with great agency and very good guide

“Trek Manasulu 12 days. Great experience with Hiamalya Treks! Upstream of the trek, we were able to remotely plan the route, logistics. Madan, the agency manager, was very accommodating and and attentive. We were able to get to the start of the trek without worries. During the trek, our guide Koumar was at the top: kind, helpful, attentive. He found us quality lodges throughout the course and allowed us to spend a trek with peace of mind. Touch the Himalaya, the people and its culture

“November 2025 I have done the Langtang- Gosainkunda -Helambu trek in 16 days organized by the agency Touch the Himalaya Trek & Expedition. Madan Neupane, director of the trekking agency is a friendly and trustworthy person who has a lot of experience in trekking, especially because he has been walking all the treks by himself. He is a great source of information and listened well to my personal wishes! Madan, thanks a lot for your warm welcome with the milk teas at your office and the time you spend in answering all my specific questions. I warmly recommend you and your trekking agency Touch the Himalaya Treks & expedition. In particular I like to mention my guide/porter Ram Adhikari who accompanied me 16 days during the trekking, he is a sincere and pleasant person and is able to communicate in English well. Ram, thank you for your accompany, I really liked the time (and interesting talks about Nepal and ) we had together. I warmly recommend you as a guide/ porter!”

Incredible Hike with the Best guide!!

“"Highly recommend this company.! We booked our Manaslu Circuit hike in the main office in Kathmandu, after going round a few different companies we settled for Manaslu Guides because this one just felt right. Having spoke with the owner in the office he tailor-made a trek for our needs. Madan, the owner is really helpful and honest and a pleasure to meet. We completed the Manaslu Circuit yesterday with our guide Bikram who was amazing! Such a lovely guy really and a great guide. We really felt comfortable with him and we learnt alot from him, and even gained a friend. We couldn't have asked for a guide more suited to us. Bikram is a humble guy and made us smile every day, and he even played the wooden flute at different times on the hike, sometimes in the morning and when we reached beautiful spots on the hike which really elevated our experience in such dramatic landscapes. We cannot praise him enough. We loved the trek and with Bikram, it made it even more special. Thanks again!" Date of experience: March 2026”

Witness the Splendor of the Himalayan Sunrise at Nagarkot !!

“My tour guides, Beekash and Roshan, were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about the sunrise trip to Nagarkot. They were friendly, and kind, and made sure I was comfortable throughout the journey. The driver ensured a safe and smooth ride. We watched the stunning sunrise and enjoyed a two-hour hike, which felt like an outing with friends rather than a guided tour. I would highly recommend them! Amazing Sunrise Nargarkot Tour - nagarkot.”

Everest base camp trek

“This is not my first choice of Touch the Himalayas. Having good experience of one-day trip around Kathmandu last year, and based on the experience of my friends, we chose this firm again for Everest BC and Gokyo lakes individual trek. I admire director of firm Madan and his ability to meet all client expectations. Madan helped us to prepare for the trip, resolved our queries and offered complements after trek (such as massage and farewell dinner). Despite of some unpleasant weather conditions, this was wonderful trek and wonderful experience with a lot of sweet memories I also appreciate the efforts of our dear guide and porter during the trek we were the best team ever I do reconnect Touch the Himalayas to organize your trek in Nepal or ever in neighboring countries.”

Trekking to manalsu circuit with my friends.

“Thanks toTouch the Himalaya and mr madan for an unforgettable adventure filled with natural beauty and cultural richness. The trail took us through remote villages, lush forests, suspension bridges, and dramatic mountain landscapes. Each day brought new challenges, from steep ascents to high-altitude passes, but the camaraderie and stunning scenery made it all worth it. Crossing the Larke Pass was a true highlight exhausting but incredibly rewarding. We met kind locals, experienced Tibetan-influenced culture, and enjoyed peaceful moments away from the crowds. This trek not only strengthened our friendship but also gave us memories we’ll cherish for a lifetime.”
